I grew up in San Diego and started out playing in my father’s swing band at 15 years old first playing trumpet then guitar and drums and being the youngest member of the local musicians union 325 at the age of 17. Later forming rock bands performing throughout San Diego with airplay on KGB 101 FM featuring my original music. We would travel across the border frequently to play weekend dates at the La Quinta Del Mar Resort in Rosarito Beach Mexico with the band at the time perfectly named for those shows "Baja Scream"
In 1988 I relocated to Oahu Hawaii to play for a dance hall reggae band called Wisdom Tree. This lead to me playing in a Top 40 group that was the house band that summer at the Blue Water Café on Kuhio avenue right in the heart of Waikiki. I also had extended dates at Wave Waikiki and the Tom Selleck owned Black Orchid restaurant.
It was during this time that my agent in Honolulu started booking my band overseas touring worldwide with repeated trips to Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Guam, Iwo Jima, Marcus Island, Johnston Atoll, Philippines, and Australia. This would also double as a surf safari bringing our surfboards with us paddling out in all the stops that had waves. Then on my own I would perform in Thailand, München Germany and sit in with groups in Laos and Beijing China.
With all of the extensive touring that would span over 15 years I would soon fill every page on my passport needing a new one.
I performed well over 1000 shows alone for our military stationed abroad. We even played for troops a couple months after the gulf war in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Saffron Iraq.
While touring in Korea my band opened up for Skid Row, Quiet Riot and Shaggy.
I played after Ozzie Osborn in Korea and had the pleasure of Zakk Wylde (Ozzys guitarist) sitting in with my band after there show.
During the many years spent touring with my band playing for the 8th Army in Korea. I studied Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do from Masters and Grandmasters in a Martial Art school located just 15 miles to the border of North Korea in Dongduchon where I would take private lessons in an accelerated curriculum 6 days a week Monday through Saturday. I would test for a graduating belt on every trip back eventually receiving a first degree black belt in Hap Ki Do and a
2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
By 1992 I had made Maui my home base while still extensively touring overseas. With my rock band never leaving my side on the island we would frequently play at the Hard Rock Café, Blue Tropics, Longhis, Club 505 and Moose McGillycuddys where I began to DJ on off nights as well with repeated trips flying back and forth to Oahu playing shows at Wave Waikiki.
We would later start a year tour kicking it off back to the Wave Waikiki on Oahu for 3 months before heading to Alaska, Guam and Los Angeles.
Soon after that tour ended I hurried back home to Maui where little by little I was drawn to play Hawaiian music. I was invited to join Manutea Productions learning Tahitian drumming , Hawaiian lap steel guitar and slowly learning to sing in Hawaiian. I ended up playing Hawaiian music in every major resort on the island. And a dream came true being a staff musician for the prestigious Old Lahaina Luau. To my surprise I even passed the audition to perform as a staff musician for Tihati productions and was offered a chance to play in the Drums of Pacific Luau at the Hyatt in Ka`anapali Maui. I played Hawaiian Lap Steel Guitar for Ho`okani Band opening up in Moloka`i with Pound 4 Pound. I also played with Mondokane on Maui and in Lana`i. In Maui I performed with Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Cody Pueo Pata, Lono, Lahaina Grown and with all of the brothers of Willie K at the Paniolo Show Ka`anapali train station. I even sat in at times with one of the original ali`i members of Don Ho, Rudy Akino at the Ka`anapali Beach Resort. I brought the New Year in 4 years in a row performing at the Hana Hotel Maui.
In 2003 I relocated to North Carolina continuing tours with my rock band in Asia on average 5 months a year. After the tours I would forward my continued passion for Hawaiian music meeting Asa Young and Michael Five O Ebalaroza from Oahu to form the Hawaiian Kine Band who has opened several times now for The Makaha Sons, Patrick Landeza, Pate and performed for several hula halau competing in the Orlando Florida Ho`ike Hula competitions.
In 2008 on Oahu I performed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel patio reception before the opening ceremony of the Hawaiian Legends Awards also performing at the Hawaiian Music Awards then back to Maui at the Sheraton Ka`anapali to perform with recording artist Mondokane.
In 2009 I started fire performing and with my experience playing Hawaiian music I launched a Polynesian production company called Hula Carolina that provides authentic Polynesian Luau Shows where I front the group as the emcee singing in Hawaiian, Tahitian and English while playing ukulele and Tahitian drums with cast members from Hawaii based out of Charlotte. The group has become known as the East Coasts premier Polynesian Show with Fire specializing in resort and corporate events.
In 2023 I joined the Cleveland County Chamber Of Commerce here in Shelby under the direction of Christine Cribb Executive Director and CEO. Christine soon offered me the position of their Sound Engineer for the Chamber. Responsible for the music and all audio needs for there luncheon's and special events with the addition of special effect lighting and photo booth when needed, also producing videos to highlight upcoming events.
I`m humbled with excitement for this ongoing position as it allows me to be creative and contribute to the success of the diverse events along side the Chamber team who are all amazing.
Under one roof here at Greg Torzillo Entertainment I offer my experience to you as a Guitarist, Fire Performer, DJ, Sound Engineer, Karaoke Host with a Polynesian Show and a Photo Booth as the cherry on top!
